Rest For A Weary Soul Daily Devotional - Thursday, September 3, 2009

Praise the Lord and Good Evening,

I just wanted to say that I've not been able to write a devotional daily recently due to the fact that work life is becoming increasingly more time consuming.  That type of situation can be viewed as positive or negative.  I heard one co-worker complaining about a product deliverable date that had been changed.  It directly impacted the person and his plans for his family.....it's difficult to work with something that at the onset is considered written in stone then suddenly becomes a moving target.  There's always reasonings as to why things change.  We live our lives often with a regiment to do this, that and the other. But we all can relate to the fact that planning and executing are two totally different animals.

The other day I was making my way to the lobby elevator at work.  A co-worker was a few minutes ahead of me.  I was still driving around the parking lot when he was on his way inside the office building.  No problem... ...I expected my co-worker to have been upstairs by the time I arrived in the lobby.  But it wasn't so....no sooner did I step in the lobby, that's when the elevator arrived.  He said, "I was wondering why this elevator was taking so long to come.  It was waiting on you.  We can go now."  We laughed about it....and went on upstairs.  About an hour later, I had to send some information via the fax machine.  I sent the paperwork through and was waiting on my fax receipt.  It took about 5 minutes (which made no sense given that it was only a few pages...but I needed the receipt, so I had to wait).   While waiting, another co-worker came over and had some questions about the postage machine, which was right next to the fax machine.  I shared with her my knowledge of how to operate the postage machine.  She completed her task and as soon as she said, "Thank you", my fax receipt finally came through.  I smiled and thought, "That was why I didn't get my receipt right away."

Yes, I know these examples are trivial in comparison to the more weighty things of life (such as being delayed only to find out you missed a terrible accident)......you can plan all you want, you can stand prepared to execute x, y, and z, but truly God is in control of it all and no matter how much you may excel at organizing, time management or how you can "work a plan", God is still in charge and things that should work according as planned, will not, not if God says they won't.  This took quite a while for me to accept....oh I grasped the concept quickly.....I knew I could only execute my plan if God allowed...but accepting it was the tough part.  Why, you ask?  Well, I felt all God had to do was let what I wanted to go through......what could possibly be wrong with that?

In this case, all I needed was to get my fax receipt and then I'd count that effort as done and move on to the next....but God works with multiple purposes in mind.....He wanted me on that elevator with my co-worker just as He wanted me to wait for my fax receipt....so somoene else could get some help with the postage machine.  He does care about us and if He cares about us, then those trivial things aren't so trivial.  For Him to take note and work in the trivial things, what more of the hefty issues of life?  If He is concerned about sparrows and knowing the number of hairs on our head (that's not just a one moment in a day of your life knowledge...that's at all times in our lives...when hair is falling out due to stress, medication, frying, coloring, teasing and more...He knows how many hairs are on your head at all times, throughout your life)....now you talk about that being trivial..... He wants us to know He truly does know it all...and He knows what trivial things are important to you.... it is amazing to realize this is the Lord of Lord, King of Kings....that is taking our plans and "working" His plan in our lives!!   So, if He can be on top of your hair count every day of your life, then certainly our plans are also known, but more importantly, His plans will be executed!!

Go to now, ye that say, today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.  For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. (James 4:13-15 KJV)

Matt 11:28-29 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
