Was it Worth It? 3/10/10

Rest For A Weary Soul Daily Devotional - Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Praise the Lord and Good Evening,

Was it worth it?
I used to read about Cain and Abel and get angry over the story. Why? Well, why would God allow Cain to kill Abel? I felt since Abel had done the right thing, then he should have been rewarded with some extra protection (you know “I got your back” kind of thing). I felt God should have snatched up Cain before he levied the blow against Abel…God accepted Abel’s offering and yet He didn't step in during the assault against Abel.

Sometimes we deem ourselves as having been robbed, when in reality, as long as you offer the right sacrifice unto the Lord, it truly doesn’t matter what people think/do against you. Easy to say….for Abel, it was worth the sacrifice. It cost him his life, but it was with the knowledge what he’d done was right. Do you think if he’d known that gift to the Lord would cost his life, he would have given it? You and I don’t always know what is on the heels of our sacrifice. That’s not why we give….we give because God requires and we want to be in right fellowship with Him. That is most important.

Cain took issue with a situation that basically was none of his business. The situation was between Abel and God. What Cain should have been doing was looking at the relationship between himself and God….the enemy will cause it to appear to be easier to blame someone else for our own faults and failures than make the change and give God what He wants. Instead Cain chose to eradicate Abel.   Cain wasn’t willing to render a sacrifice acceptable to God (although God gave him a second chance) but he wasn’t worried about a second chance. He was more concerned about destroying Abel…..and in that he didn’t realize he was destroying himself.

And that is the enemy’s desire to take you from bad to worse…..Cain could have done better. Bottom line. It was in his power to do better. He just didn’t want to…and that is the sad part. He just didn’t want to. So he convinced himself erroneously that taking out Abel would solve all of his problems with God.

We are in the same boat and Cain and Abel….we are given opportunity to give God what He asks for on a daily basis. We know what He’s demanding of us….so, back to the question, was it worth it?  It depends on who's shoes you're in....from Abel's perspective, yeah, it’s worth it!!

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering; 5) But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6) And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? And why is thy countenance fallen? (Genesis 4:4-6 KJV)
